Is RO Water Acidic? What Every Indian Family Should Know

Quick answer

Yes, RO water is usually slightly acidic, typically around pH 5.5–6.5. Reverse osmosis strips out most dissolved minerals, and the purified water then absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, forming a little carbonic acid. RO water is clean and safe, but it is not alkaline and contains no dissolved hydrogen.

Why RO water ends up acidic

A reverse osmosis membrane is excellent at removing dissolved salts, heavy metals and microbes. But the same membrane also removes calcium, magnesium and bicarbonates, the minerals that naturally keep water near neutral. With that buffer gone, carbon dioxide from the air dissolves into the water and forms carbonic acid, nudging pH below 7.

Should you stop using RO?

No. In most of Haryana and NCR, RO is essential because groundwater TDS is high. The smarter step is to keep your RO for purification, then enhance the water. That is exactly how the Believe ionizer is designed: RO purifies, Believe transforms.

How to check your own water

  • Use pH drops or a calibrated pH meter on a fresh glass of RO water.
  • Check TDS with a TDS meter: 100–150 ppm is ideal for an ionizer.
  • Or book a free Believe home demo and we will test it for you.

Key takeaways

  • RO output commonly measures pH 5.5–6.5.
  • RO removes minerals that buffer pH, and absorbed CO₂ lowers it further.
  • RO water is clean, but it has a positive (oxidising) ORP and 0 ppb hydrogen.
  • An ionizer after your RO can raise pH and add hydrogen without replacing the RO.

Frequently asked questions

Is acidic RO water harmful?

RO water is safe to drink. Its slightly acidic pH simply means it lacks the minerals and alkalinity found in natural spring water. Many families prefer to enhance it rather than drink it as is.

Can I add minerals to RO water instead?

Mineral cartridges add some minerals back but do not change ORP or add hydrogen. An ionizer changes pH, ORP and dissolved hydrogen through electrolysis.
