RO Wastewater: 7 Smart Ways to Reuse It at Home

Quick answer

RO purifiers reject water with concentrated dissolved salts, often 2–3 litres for every litre purified, depending on the model and your input water. This reject water is not for drinking, but it is perfectly useful for mopping floors, flushing toilets, washing cars and two-wheelers, cleaning balconies and pre-rinsing utensils. Check its TDS before using it on plants, as high-salt water can harm many of them. Collect it with a simple bucket or tank setup.

How much water does your RO waste?

Older or basic RO units can reject 3 litres or more for every litre of purified water; newer “water-saving” models do better. Over a year, a family can send thousands of litres down the drain. In water-stressed parts of Haryana and NCR, that is worth saving.

Seven ways to reuse it

  • Mopping floors, with or without your usual cleaner.
  • Flushing toilets: pour it into the cistern or a bucket flush.
  • Washing cars, scooters and bikes (wipe dry to avoid spots).
  • Cleaning balconies, stairs and parking areas.
  • Pre-rinsing utensils before the final wash.
  • Cooler water in summer (check the cooler manufacturer’s advice on TDS).
  • Some hardy plants, but only after checking TDS.

A note on plants

Reject water TDSUse on plants?
Below ~1,000 mg/LOften fine for hardy plants; mix with normal water
1,000–2,000 mg/LOnly for salt-tolerant plants, and sparingly
Above ~2,000 mg/LAvoid: salts can build up in the soil

Simple collection setup

Route the RO drain pipe into a covered bucket or a small tank with a tap. Label it “Not for drinking”, keep it covered to stop mosquitoes breeding, and use it within a day or two.

Key takeaways

  • RO reject water has high TDS: never drink it.
  • Ideal for mopping, flushing, vehicle washing and outdoor cleaning.
  • Check TDS before watering plants; high salts can damage them.
  • A small storage tank under the sink makes reuse effortless.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Believe ionizer produce waste water?

The ionizer produces a small acidic stream along with the alkaline water, which is useful for cleaning. The bulk of household water waste comes from the RO stage.

Can I reduce RO waste?

Ask your RO technician about water-saving models, correct pressure settings and regular membrane maintenance.
